Your guide to Vilnius
Few European capitals carry quite the same sense of accumulated time as Vilnius. The Lithuanian capital sits at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers, and its Old Town, one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflects nearly seven centuries of layered history: Gothic churches, Baroque facades, Renaissance courtyards, and the remnants of a once-thriving Jewish cultural centre that earned the city the name the Jerusalem of Lithuania. That depth of history is not merely decorative; it shapes how the city feels to walk through, where every narrow lane in the Pilies Street quarter or the Užupis district seems to open onto something unexpected.
Užupis itself deserves particular attention. This small neighbourhood across the Vilnia river declared itself an independent republic in 1997, complete with its own constitution and a resident artistic community that has made it one of the more genuinely characterful corners of any Baltic city. It is not a theme park version of bohemia but a working neighbourhood of studios, galleries, and cafes that happens to occupy a bend in the river beneath the Bernardine Gardens. Crossing the small bridge into Užupis on a quiet morning, when the light comes low off the water, gives a sense of the city that no amount of guidebook prose quite prepares you for.
