Few European capitals carry quite the same sense of accumulated time as Vilnius. The Lithuanian capital sits at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers, and its Old Town, one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflects nearly seven centuries of layered history: Gothic churches, Baroque facades, Renaissance courtyards, and the remnants of a once-thriving Jewish cultural centre that earned the city the name the Jerusalem of Lithuania.
