Your guide to Utrecht
Utrecht earns its reputation not by competing with Amsterdam but by being entirely itself. Situated at the geographical centre of the Netherlands, it is one of the country's oldest cities, its origins stretching back to a Roman fortress built where the Rhine once ran. That layered past is visible at street level in a way that feels genuinely lived-in: the Oudegracht, the city's famous sunken canal, is lined with two-tiered wharves whose lower cellars, once used for goods storage, now house cafes and restaurants that spill out along the water. It is an arrangement found nowhere else in the Netherlands, and it gives Utrecht a particular intimacy that larger cities rarely manage.
The medieval centre rewards slow exploration on foot. The Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at just over 112 metres, dominates the skyline and marks the site of the former Dom Church, much of whose nave collapsed in a storm in 1674 and was never rebuilt. The resulting open square between tower and choir is one of the more quietly dramatic urban accidents in northern Europe. Around it, the university quarter, established in 1636, weaves academic buildings into the fabric of streets that were already centuries old, giving the whole centre a density of history that repays attention.
