Utrecht earns its reputation not by competing with Amsterdam but by being entirely itself. The resulting open square between tower and choir is one of the more quietly dramatic urban accidents in northern Europe. Around it, the university quarter, established in 1636, weaves academic buildings into the fabric of streets that were already centuries old, giving the whole centre a density of history that repays attention.
