Your guide to Trento
Trento occupies a broad Alpine valley where the Adige river runs south through a corridor of dolomitic peaks, and the city has spent centuries at the crossroads of Italian and Germanic Europe. It was here, between 1545 and 1563, that the Council of Trent convened and reshaped the course of Western Christianity, a fact that still colours the city's architecture, its civic pride, and the weight of its public spaces. The cathedral square, Piazza del Duomo, anchors the old centre with the Romanesque bulk of the Cattedrale di San Vigilio on one side and the Neptune fountain at its middle, and the frescoed facades of the surrounding palazzi give the whole ensemble a gravity that feels earned rather than staged.
The city rewards unhurried attention. The Castello del Buonconsiglio, the former residence of the prince-bishops who governed Trento for centuries, rises above the eastern edge of the historic centre and contains one of the most remarkable fresco cycles in northern Italy, the Torre Aquila's depiction of the months of the year painted around 1400. Below the castle, the streets of the old town move between medieval arcades and Renaissance courtyards, with the covered walkways along Via Manci offering shelter in any season. Trento is compact enough to cover on foot, and the scale of it means that the transition from Roman archaeological remains to contemporary civic life happens within a few hundred metres.
