Your guide to Parma
Few Italian cities carry their reputation as quietly and as confidently as Parma. Positioned in the broad plain of the Po Valley, roughly midway between Milan and Bologna along the Via Emilia, it has spent centuries accumulating cultural and culinary distinction without ever seeming to court attention. The result is a city that rewards the visitor who arrives with curiosity rather than a checklist.
The historic centre is compact enough to cover on foot, and the architecture repays the effort. The Piazza del Duomo groups together the Romanesque cathedral and the octagonal Baptistery of Parma in a way that feels almost improbably harmonious, the pink Verona marble of the Baptistery ageing into a colour that shifts with the light across the day. Inside the cathedral, Correggio's fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin fills the dome with a swirling, upward momentum that was considered radical when it was completed in the 1520s and still stops people mid-step. The Palazzo della Pilotta, a vast ducal complex that was never fully finished, houses the Farnese Theatre and the National Gallery, and its sheer scale gives a sense of the ambition that the Farnese family brought to Parma during their rule from the sixteenth century onward.
