Few Italian cities carry their reputation as quietly and as confidently as Parma. The Piazza del Duomo groups together the Romanesque cathedral and the octagonal Baptistery of Parma in a way that feels almost improbably harmonious, the pink Verona marble of the Baptistery ageing into a colour that shifts with the light across the day. Inside the cathedral, Correggio's fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin fills the dome with a swirling, upward momentum that was considered radical when it was completed in the 1520s and still stops people mid-step. The Palazzo della Pilotta, a vast ducal complex that was never fully finished, houses the Farnese Theatre and the National Gallery, and its sheer scale gives a sense of the ambition that the Farnese family brought to Parma during their rule from the sixteenth century onward.
