Your guide to Mumbai

Your guide to Mumbai tickets

Few cities in the world carry as much weight as Mumbai, a metropolis of roughly twenty million people pressed between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, where the colonial geometry of the Fort district meets the chaotic tenderness of Dharavi, and where Bollywood dreams are manufactured at industrial scale alongside some of the most expensive real estate on the planet. Maharashtra's capital is not a city that reveals itself quickly. It rewards patience, curiosity, and a willingness to follow its own rhythms rather than impose an itinerary upon it.

The southern tip of the city, known as South Mumbai or SoBo, is where most first-time visitors find their footing. The Gateway of India, that great basalt arch completed in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, stands at the edge of the harbour with a permanence that anchors the surrounding chaos. Behind it, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel has watched over Apollo Bunder for more than a century. A short walk north brings you into the Fort area, where Gothic Revival and Indo-Saracenic architecture line the streets in a UNESCO-recognised ensemble that includes the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a building so ornate it seems to have been dreamed rather than engineered. The Oval Maidan, flanked by these Victorian piles on one side and Art Deco apartment blocks on the other, is one of the more quietly remarkable urban spaces in Asia.
