Behind it, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel has watched over Apollo Bunder for more than a century. A short walk north brings you into the Fort area, where Gothic Revival and Indo-Saracenic architecture line the streets in a UNESCO-recognised ensemble that includes the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a building so ornate it seems to have been dreamed rather than engineered. The Oval Maidan, flanked by these Victorian piles on one side and Art Deco apartment blocks on the other, is one of the more quietly remarkable urban spaces in Asia.
