橙 指南
Few Australian country towns carry as much cultural weight as Orange, a city on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales that sits roughly 260 kilometres west of Sydney at an elevation of around 860 metres above sea level. That altitude shapes almost everything here: the cool climate, the reliable rainfall, the rich volcanic soils, and the particular quality of light that has long attracted painters and growers alike. Orange is one of the most significant cool-climate wine regions in Australia, producing pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, and shiraz from vineyards that ring the city and climb the slopes of Mount Canobolas, an extinct shield volcano that dominates the western skyline.
The city itself was surveyed in the 1840s and named after Prince William of Orange, though its character owes more to the pastoral and agricultural wealth of the surrounding region than to any colonial formality. The central streets retain a handsome Victorian and Edwardian streetscape, with the civic buildings along Summer Street giving the place a solidity that reflects the prosperity the goldfields and grazing runs once generated. Ophir, a short drive north of the city, was the site of the first officially recognised gold discovery in Australia in 1851, a fact that still anchors Orange's sense of its own history.
