Few Australian country towns carry as much cultural weight as Orange, a city on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales that sits roughly 260 kilometres west of Sydney at an elevation of around 860 metres above sea level. The central streets retain a handsome Victorian and Edwardian streetscape, with the civic buildings along Summer Street giving the place a solidity that reflects the prosperity the goldfields and grazing runs once generated. Ophir, a short drive north of the city, was the site of the first officially recognised gold discovery in Australia in 1851, a fact that still anchors Orange's sense of its own history.
