Few Australian country towns carry as much cultural weight as Orange, a city on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales that sits roughly 260 kilometres west of Sydney at an elevation of around 860 metres above sea level. Ophir, a short drive north of the city, was the site of the first officially recognised gold discovery in Australia in 1851, a fact that still anchors Orange's sense of its own history.
