Few Australian country towns carry as much cultural weight as Orange, a city on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales that sits roughly 260 kilometres west of Sydney at an elevation of around 860 metres above sea level. The city itself was surveyed in the 1840s and named after Prince William of Orange, though its character owes more to the pastoral and agricultural wealth of the surrounding region than to any colonial formality. Ophir, a short drive north of the city, was the site of the first officially recognised gold discovery in Australia in 1851, a fact that still anchors Orange's sense of its own history.
