Zagreb rewards visitors who arrive expecting a capital city and find instead something more layered: a Central European metropolis that spent centuries under Habsburg administration, absorbed the architectural ambitions of the nineteenth century, and emerged from the twentieth with a distinct civic confidence. The upper town, Gornji Grad, sits on a ridge above the modern centre and contains the medieval core of the city, including the Cathedral of the Assumption with its neo-Gothic spires and the colourful tiled roof of St Mark's Church, whose geometric pattern in the national colours has become one of the most reproduced images in Croatian tourism.
