Your guide to Ko Samui
Ko Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand off the eastern coast of the Kra Peninsula, the second-largest island in the country and the centrepiece of a cluster of islands that together form one of Southeast Asia's most compelling marine landscapes. Coconut palms still line stretches of its coastline, a reminder that the island's economy ran on coconut exports for much of the twentieth century before tourism arrived in earnest. That layered identity, part working island, part international resort destination, gives Ko Samui a texture that its neighbours in the Samui Archipelago do not quite replicate.
The island's geography shapes how visitors move through it. Chaweng, on the north-east coast, is the most developed stretch, with a long arc of white sand and the commercial density that comes with it. Lamai, further south, is quieter without being remote. The northern cape around Mae Nam and Bo Phut has a different character again: Bo Phut's Fisherman's Village preserves a row of old Chinese shophouses along the waterfront, and the weekly walking street market there draws both locals and visitors. Inland, the terrain rises into forested hills, and the Na Muang waterfalls are among the few genuinely accessible points where the island's interior reveals itself.
