Urangan sits at the southern tip of Hervey Bay, a wide, sheltered arc of coastline on Queensland's Fraser Coast that faces north-west across the Great Sandy Strait. The town is quiet and low-rise, built around a long timber jetty that stretches nearly a kilometre into the bay, and its character is shaped almost entirely by the water in front of it. Researchers have noted this behaviour for decades, and it is the reason Hervey Bay was among the first places in the world to be declared a whale heritage site. Urangan's marina is the departure point for the vessels that carry passengers out to meet them, and on a calm morning the crossing from the jetty precinct to open water can feel almost ceremonial.
