Urangan 指南
Urangan sits at the southern tip of Hervey Bay, a wide, sheltered arc of coastline on Queensland's Fraser Coast that faces north-west across the Great Sandy Strait. The town is quiet and low-rise, built around a long timber jetty that stretches nearly a kilometre into the bay, and its character is shaped almost entirely by the water in front of it. This is not a place that competes with the Gold Coast for spectacle or the Whitsundays for glamour; it earns its reputation through one of the most reliable wildlife encounters in the southern hemisphere.
Between roughly July and November, humpback whales move through Hervey Bay in extraordinary numbers on their northward and southward migrations. The bay's geometry matters here: the shallow, protected waters act as a resting ground, and whales, particularly mothers with calves, linger for days rather than passing through in hours. Researchers have noted this behaviour for decades, and it is the reason Hervey Bay was among the first places in the world to be declared a whale heritage site. Urangan's marina is the departure point for the vessels that carry passengers out to meet them, and on a calm morning the crossing from the jetty precinct to open water can feel almost ceremonial.
