The bay's geometry matters here: the shallow, protected waters act as a resting ground, and whales, particularly mothers with calves, linger for days rather than passing through in hours. Researchers have noted this behaviour for decades, and it is the reason Hervey Bay was among the first places in the world to be declared a whale heritage site. Urangan's marina is the departure point for the vessels that carry passengers out to meet them, and on a calm morning the crossing from the jetty precinct to open water can feel almost ceremonial.
