Corralejo sits at the northern tip of Fuerteventura, the second-largest of the Canary Islands and the one closest to the African coast. On a clear day, the outline of Lanzarote is visible across the narrow strait to the north, and the Saharan origins of the island's landscape are unmistakable in the pale, wind-sculpted dunes that stretch south of the town. Those dunes, protected within the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo, cover several kilometres of coastline and represent one of the most striking natural formations in the entire archipelago. For those who prefer calmer water, the sheltered coves closer to the town centre offer gentler swimming, and the sea temperature rarely drops low enough to discourage a dip even in January.
