Your guide to Calgary
Calgary sits where the prairies meet the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, a position that shapes almost everything about the city: its skyline, its weather, its self-image, and the range of things a visitor can do within a single day. The downtown core rises sharply from the Bow River, and on clear days, which are plentiful given Calgary's reputation as one of Canada's sunniest cities, the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies form a backdrop that still surprises people who arrive expecting only flatlands. That tension between urban ambition and raw wilderness is not incidental to Calgary; it is the city's defining characteristic.
The city's history is bound up with cattle, oil, and the railway, and those threads are easier to follow here than in many North American cities of comparable size. The Inglewood neighbourhood, Calgary's oldest, grew up around the original Fort Calgary and still carries a distinct character, with independent shops and galleries occupying buildings that predate the oil booms. Further south, the Elbow River corridor leads toward Mission and the cluster of restaurants and cafes that have made that district a reliable draw for locals on weekends. The downtown itself is navigated in part through the Plus 15 network, an enclosed elevated walkway system that connects dozens of city-centre buildings and reflects Calgary's pragmatic relationship with its winters, which arrive early and stay long.
