Your guide to Albufeira
Albufeira sits on the southern coast of Portugal where the Atlantic meets a coastline of golden limestone cliffs, sea caves, and wide sandy beaches that have made the Algarve one of Europe's most visited stretches of shoreline. What was once a modest fishing village, its name derived from the Arabic Al-Buhera meaning small sea or lagoon, grew rapidly through the latter decades of the twentieth century into a resort town of considerable scale. Yet the bones of the old settlement survive in the Albufeira Antiga, the whitewashed old town that climbs the hillside above the main beach, where narrow lanes and tiled facades offer a quieter counterpoint to the livelier strips that surround it.
The geography here does much of the work. The town is flanked by Praia dos Pescadores, the fishermen's beach that sits directly below the old town, and Praia da Oura to the east, which draws a younger, more energetic crowd. Further along the coast in either direction, the Algarve reveals its more dramatic face: the sculpted rock arches and grottos that have made this region famous, and which form the backdrop for much of what visitors actually come to do. The sea is not merely scenery in Albufeira; it is the primary venue.
