Modern art on the Grand Canal
Ca' Pesaro is a baroque palazzo on the Grand Canal that houses two distinct museums: the International Gallery of Modern Art and the Oriental Art Museum. Once the home of Venetian nobles, its ornate rooms now display works by Klimt, Chagall, Kandinsky, Matisse, and other modern masters alongside a significant collection of Asian art and artefacts.
The Gallery of Modern Art
The International Gallery spans the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular strengths in Expressionism and Surrealism. Klimt's "Judith II" is perhaps the most celebrated piece, but the collection covers a broad range of movements and styles. The palazzo's grand rooms create an unusual setting for modern art, placing avant-garde works within baroque frames and beneath painted ceilings.
The Oriental Art Museum
The upper floors hold the Oriental Art Museum, with over 30,000 objects from Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. The collection was assembled by Prince Henry of Bourbon-Parma during his travels in the late 19th century. Japanese armour, Chinese porcelain, Indonesian textiles, and Edo-period paintings provide a counterpoint to the European art below.
The palazzo
Ca' Pesaro itself is a work of art. Designed by Baldassare Longhena (who also designed the Salute church), its Grand Canal facade is among the finest in Venice. The interior preserves original stucco work, frescoed ceilings, and marble floors that rival the art on the walls.
