Your guide to Urgup
Few places in Turkey demand as much of the eye as Urgup. Set in the Nevsehir province of Cappadocia, the town sits among a landscape that looks less like something shaped by geology and more like something imagined: tall cones of volcanic tufa, cave dwellings cut directly into cliff faces, and valleys whose colours shift from ochre to rose depending on the hour. The region was formed over millions of years by the erosion of ash deposits from ancient volcanic eruptions, and Urgup has grown up in the middle of it, a working town with a long history of wine production, stone-carved architecture, and a position that makes it one of the more practical bases for exploring the wider plateau.
The town itself rewards a slow walk. The old quarter climbs upward from the main square, past cave houses that have been inhabited for centuries and facades carved from the soft local stone. Urgup has a more settled, residential character than some of its neighbours, and that quality gives it a different texture from the more tourist-facing villages nearby. The surrounding valleys, including Goreme, Devrent, and the Rose Valley to the west, are all within easy reach, and the town's position means that the famous fairy chimneys of the region are visible from the streets themselves on clear days.
