Hofstetten bei Brienz sits on the northern shore of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, a small village whose name most travellers encounter not on its own terms but as the address of one of the country's most quietly remarkable cultural institutions. The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum occupies a vast sweep of hillside just above the village, and it is the reason most visitors find themselves here at all.
