Few English cities carry as much weight in as compact a form as Salisbury. Set in the Wiltshire chalk downland where the rivers Avon, Nadder, Bourne, and Wylye converge, it is a place whose skyline has been defined for eight centuries by a single, extraordinary fact: the tallest cathedral spire in Britain, rising to 123 metres above the surrounding water meadows.
