Overview
Source: Parco archeologico del Colosseo, 2023 annual report
The Colosseum is the most visited monument in Italy, with 7.6 million visitors in 2023. Built in 80 AD, the amphitheatre seated 50,000 spectators for gladiatorial combat, animal hunts and public spectacles. A single entry ticket covers the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill as one archaeological zone. Without skip-the-line tickets, summer queues at the Colosseum entrance can exceed 2 hours.
Beyond standard entry, specialised tours unlock areas not included in regular tickets. The arena floor tour takes you onto the reconstructed stage where gladiators fought, with views down into the underground passages. The underground tour descends into the hypogeum, the network of tunnels, lifts and cages where animals, prisoners and stage machinery were held. Family tours adapt the history for children with storytelling guides and gladiator-themed activities. VIP and private tours offer the most flexible, personalised experience.
Standard entry tickets cover the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and are the most affordable option. You enter through the general ticket-holder lane (faster than the ticket-purchase queue, but not instant) and explore at your own pace. Guided tours add skip-the-line entry and expert commentary on the history of gladiatorial combat and Imperial Rome.
The arena floor is a restricted area requiring a special ticket. The reconstructed wooden stage gives you the gladiator's-eye perspective of the amphitheatre and dramatic views down into the underground passages. The underground (hypogeum) is only accessible with a guided tour and is the most expensive but most memorable Colosseum experience. Family tours adapt the content for children with storytelling, props and gladiator activities. Combo tours with the Vatican are the best option if you want to cover both sites in one day.
The quietest time is late afternoon (after 2pm), when morning tour groups have left and the light is at its best for photography. Morning slots (8:30am to 10:30am) sell out first and are the most crowded. The last entry is approximately one hour before closing.
Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. November through February is the quietest season. In summer, afternoon visits also avoid the worst midday heat. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are always less crowded than the Colosseum itself and are best explored with 1 to 2 hours of unhurried wandering.
FAQ
Quick answers on booking, access and what to expect.
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the Colosseum itself, plus 1 to 2 hours for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. A guided tour covering all three runs about 3 hours. The underground and arena floor tours add 30 to 45 minutes.
Yes if you want to see the hypogeum tunnels and understand how the arena operated. The underground is only accessible with a guided tour and sells out well in advance. The arena floor is included in the underground combo and gives the most dramatic perspective inside the Colosseum.
Late afternoon (after 2pm) is the quietest and has the best light. Morning slots sell out first. The last entry is about an hour before closing. In summer, afternoon visits also avoid the worst midday heat.
Yes. All Colosseum tickets include access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The combined ticket is valid for one entry to each site within 24 hours. Start at the Colosseum (busiest), then walk to the Forum and Palatine Hill.
Yes. Children under 18 get free entry (ID required). Family-friendly guided tours adapt the history for children with storytelling and props. There is no shade inside the Colosseum, so bring hats, sunscreen and water in summer.
