Tucked against the eastern edge of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, with the Rhine plain stretching westward toward Alsace, the city sits at a crossroads that has shaped its character for centuries. The Münster, a sandstone Gothic cathedral that took roughly three hundred years to complete, rises above the old town's rooftops and remains the clearest expression of how long people have been investing in this place. Freiburg is a university city, home to one of Germany's oldest institutions of higher learning, and that academic presence gives the streets around the Altstadt a particular energy, especially in the warmer months when the outdoor cafes along the Bächle, the narrow medieval water channels that run through the city's pavements, fill with students and visitors alike.

The Schlossberg, the wooded hill immediately east of the centre, offers a straightforward walk to panoramic views over the terracotta rooftops and, on clear days, across to the Vosges mountains in France.
