Your guide to Pereira

Your guide to Pereira tickets

Pereira sits at the centre of Colombia's Coffee Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage region where the Andes split into three cordilleras and the altitude keeps the air cool even at a latitude barely north of the equator. The city itself is the capital of the Risaralda department, founded in the nineteenth century and rebuilt with characteristic paisa resilience after a series of earthquakes, most recently the significant tremor of 1999. What emerged from those reconstructions is a city that wears its modernity lightly, using it as a platform for the agricultural and cultural richness that surrounds it on every side.

The urban centre rewards a morning's exploration. The Plaza de Bolívar is anchored by one of the more unusual monuments in South American civic sculpture, a nude bronze of Simón Bolívar on horseback by Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, unveiled in 1963 and still a point of local pride and occasional debate. The cathedral beside it, rebuilt in concrete after earthquake damage, has a quiet interior that contrasts with the commercial energy of the streets running off the square. The La Circunvalar corridor and the Avenida 30 de Agosto give a sense of how Pereirans actually live, with coffee shops, fruit stalls, and the particular social rhythm of a mid-sized Colombian city that has not yet been reshaped entirely by tourism.
