Tambon Chalong sits at the southern end of Phuket island, a sub-district that most visitors pass through on their way to somewhere else without realising they have already arrived somewhere worth pausing. This is not the Phuket of beach clubs and neon-lit streets. Wat Chalong, the largest and most visited Buddhist temple in Phuket, anchors the sub-district both spiritually and geographically. The complex of gilded chedis and ornate prayer halls has been a site of pilgrimage for Thai Buddhists for well over a century, and it remains a functioning place of worship rather than a preserved relic. A few kilometres inland and uphill, the Great Buddha of Phuket, a 45-metre white marble image visible from much of the southern island, draws its own steady stream of visitors.
