The complex of gilded chedis and ornate prayer halls has been a site of pilgrimage for Thai Buddhists for well over a century, and it remains a functioning place of worship rather than a preserved relic. A few kilometres inland and uphill, the Great Buddha of Phuket, a 45-metre white marble image visible from much of the southern island, draws its own steady stream of visitors.
