Your guide to Napa

Your guide to Napa tickets

Few American cities wear their identity as unambiguously as Napa. Sitting at the southern end of the Napa Valley in northern California, roughly an hour's drive north of San Francisco, this compact city has become synonymous with one of the world's most celebrated wine regions. The valley stretches roughly 30 miles from here up towards Calistoga, flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Range to the east, and the combination of volcanic soils, warm days, and cool marine air funnelled in from San Pablo Bay has made the land extraordinarily well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and a handful of other varietals that now command serious international attention.

The city itself is often overlooked in favour of the valley's rural estates, but downtown Napa has changed considerably over the past two decades. The Oxbow District, centred on the Napa River near the old Oxbow Public Market, draws visitors with its food producers, wine merchants, and casual restaurants that reflect the agricultural abundance of the surrounding county. First Street and the riverfront have seen sustained investment, and the result is a walkable core with a genuine sense of place rather than a purely transient wine-trail stop. The river, once prone to flooding, was reshaped through a major flood-control and restoration project completed in the 2000s, and the restored banks now form a linear park that locals use throughout the year.
