Your guide to Hershey
Few American towns are as thoroughly shaped by a single idea as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton S. Hershey built not just a chocolate factory here in 1903 but an entire community around it, laying out streets named Cocoa Avenue and Chocolate Avenue, erecting a grand hotel, a sports arena, and an amusement park, and housing his workers in a model town that still bears his imprint more than a century later. The result is a place that reads, at first glance, like a novelty, yet rewards closer attention as a genuinely unusual piece of American industrial and philanthropic history.
The town sits in Derry Township in Dauphin County, roughly fourteen miles east of Harrisburg in the broad agricultural lowlands of central Pennsylvania. That setting matters: Hershey chose the location partly for its proximity to fresh milk from the surrounding dairy farms, and the pastoral character of the region has never entirely disappeared. Drive a few minutes in any direction and the landscape opens into rolling farmland, which gives the town an unhurried quality that its theme-park reputation does not always suggest.
