Your guide to Airlie Beach

Your guide to Airlie Beach tickets

Airlie Beach sits at the edge of the Coral Sea in Queensland's Whitsunday region, a small town that punches well above its weight as a gateway to one of the most celebrated stretches of coastline on earth. The Great Barrier Reef lies to the north-east, and the 74 islands of the Whitsunday archipelago fan out just offshore, making this compact strip of foreshore and marina one of the most strategically placed towns in the whole of Australia. The population is modest, the main street is short, and yet the volume of natural spectacle on offer from this single point of departure is genuinely difficult to overstate.

The town itself occupies a narrow coastal shelf between forested hills and the Coral Sea, and its geography shapes everything about how visitors move through it. Most activity concentrates around the Airlie Beach foreshore and the adjacent Abell Point Marina, where charter vessels, sailing boats, and expedition craft depart daily for the islands. The lagoon at the foreshore, a large saltwater swimming enclosure, gives swimmers a safe alternative to the open water during stinger season, which runs through the warmer months from around November to May. Outside that window, the climate remains warm and the pace of the town shifts slightly, drawing a different kind of traveller who prefers quieter anchorages and less crowded decks.
