奥尔维耶托 指南
Perched on a plateau of volcanic tufa rising sharply above the Paglia valley, Orvieto occupies one of the most dramatically situated positions of any medieval town in central Italy. The rock itself, formed from the solidified remnants of ancient volcanic activity, has been inhabited since Etruscan times, and that layered history is not merely decorative. It runs beneath the streets in a literal sense, through centuries of tunnels, cisterns, and chambers carved by successive generations into the soft stone below the city's foundations.
The cathedral is the obvious starting point for any understanding of what Orvieto means. Begun in 1290 and worked on for the better part of three centuries, the Duomo di Orvieto stands as one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture, its facade a mosaic of gold, colour, and carved relief that rewards sustained attention rather than a quick photograph. An entry ticket paired with an audio guide gives the context that the building demands, connecting the theological programme of the facade with the interior's celebrated frescoes by Luca Signorelli in the Cappella di San Brizio, works that are widely considered to have influenced Michelangelo's later treatment of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.
