Perched on a plateau of volcanic tufa rising sharply above the Paglia valley, Orvieto occupies one of the most dramatically situated positions of any medieval town in central Italy. The rock itself, formed from the solidified remnants of ancient volcanic activity, has been inhabited since Etruscan times, and that layered history is not merely decorative.
