克諾索斯 指南
Few archaeological sites in the Mediterranean carry the weight of Knossos. Situated a short distance south of Heraklion on the northern coast of Crete, this was the ceremonial and political centre of Minoan civilisation, a Bronze Age culture that flourished here for well over a thousand years before the classical world of Athens and Sparta had taken shape. The palace complex, first excavated in earnest by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans from 1900 onwards, remains one of the most significant and debated digs in European history, its labyrinthine layout lending credibility to the ancient myth of the Minotaur and the maze built by Daedalus for King Minos.
The site itself rewards slow, attentive exploration. Evans controversially reconstructed portions of the palace using reinforced concrete and vivid fresco reproductions, a decision that continues to divide scholars but gives the casual visitor a rare sense of the building's original scale and colour. The throne room, the grand staircase, the storage magazines lined with enormous clay pithoi jars: each section opens onto a different chapter of Minoan life, from ritual and administration to trade and domestic routine. The civilisation that occupied these rooms was trading with Egypt and the Levant at a time when much of northern Europe was still in the Stone Age.
