凱恩斯 指南
Few cities in Australia carry the geographical weight that Cairns does. Sitting at the edge of the Coral Sea in Far North Queensland, it occupies a narrow coastal strip between two of the planet's most significant natural systems: the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system on Earth, and the Wet Tropics rainforest, which stretches north through the Daintree and beyond Cape Tribulation. That dual inheritance shapes almost everything about the place, from the layout of the esplanade to the character of the people who pass through it.
The city itself is compact and low-rise, with the waterfront Esplanade functioning as its social spine. The lagoon pool there, free and open to the public, reflects the fact that Cairns has no beach of its own in the conventional sense; the foreshore is tidal mudflat, rich in birdlife but not suited to swimming. Visitors who arrive expecting a resort town in the Gold Coast mould tend to recalibrate quickly. Cairns is a staging point, a place of departure, and its energy comes from that orientation outward rather than inward. The night markets on the Esplanade, the dive shops along Abbott Street, the early morning queues at the marina all speak to a city organised around what lies just beyond its edges.
