Kornwerderzand sits at one of the most consequential points in the Netherlands, where the Afsluitdijk meets the Frisian coast and the IJsselmeer gives way to the Wadden Sea. This narrow strip of land is not a destination that announces itself loudly, yet it carries an outsized place in Dutch national memory. The closure of the Zuiderzee in 1932, completed here after years of engineering work that reshaped the country's entire northern coastline, stands as one of the defining achievements of twentieth-century hydraulic engineering anywhere in the world.

The Afsluitdijk itself is a 32-kilometre barrier dam connecting the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland, and Kornwerderzand marks its Frisian end. Driving or cycling across it is a peculiar experience: water on both sides, the horizon flat and immense, the wind rarely absent. The locks and sluices here are still operational, managing the water levels that keep a significant portion of the Netherlands habitable. There is something quietly extraordinary about standing at a place where the sea was, in a very real sense, moved.
