Kornwerderzand sits at one of the most consequential points in the Netherlands, where the Afsluitdijk meets the Frisian coast and the IJsselmeer gives way to the Wadden Sea. The Afsluitdijk itself is a 32-kilometre barrier dam connecting the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland, and Kornwerderzand marks its Frisian end.
