Your guide to Treviso

Your guide to Treviso tickets

Treviso occupies a particular kind of quiet confidence in the Veneto, a walled medieval city on the Sile and Botteniga rivers that has spent centuries in the shadow of Venice and seems, on the whole, rather content about it. The canals here are narrower, the piazzas less crowded, and the pace of daily life closer to what the region looked like before mass tourism reshaped its larger neighbour. That proximity to Venice, roughly thirty kilometres to the south-east, defines much of how visitors arrive and move through this corner of north-eastern Italy, and the city's Canova Airport has become a significant gateway for the wider region.

Within the old walls, Treviso rewards unhurried attention. The Calmaggiore, the main pedestrian axis linking Piazza dei Signori to the Duomo, is lined with arcaded buildings whose frescoed facades speak to a tradition of exterior painting that once covered much of the city. Fragments of that tradition survive across the centro storico, on the corners of palazzi and along the banks of the mill streams that branch off the Botteniga. The fish market on its own island in the canal, the Pescheria, is one of those places that functions exactly as it has for generations, and its continued ordinariness is precisely the point.
