Din guide till Trapani
Trapani occupies the far western tip of Sicily, a narrow spit of land that juts into the Mediterranean like a pointing finger aimed at Tunisia. The city's position has always been its defining fact: for the Phoenicians, the Arabs, the Normans, and the Spanish who each left their mark on its architecture and cuisine, Trapani was a port before it was anything else. That maritime identity has never faded. The old town sits on its promontory with the salt pans stretching south towards Marsala, their shallow basins turning pink and amber at dusk, the windmills standing against a sky that seems wider here than anywhere else on the island.
The historic centre rewards slow exploration on foot. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele runs the length of the old town, lined with baroque churches and the kind of faded grandeur that accumulates over centuries of trade and occasional neglect. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Palazzo Senatorio, the church of Sant'Agostino with its Gothic rose window: these are not monuments that announce themselves loudly, but they accumulate into a coherent picture of a city that was once genuinely prosperous and cosmopolitan. The Arab-Norman influence surfaces in the street plan itself, in the narrow lanes that open unexpectedly onto small piazzas. Trapani's famous Good Friday procession, the Misteri, is one of the oldest and most elaborate in Sicily, a tradition that has run for centuries and draws the entire city into its orbit each spring.
