Your guide to Shrewsbury

Your guide to Shrewsbury tickets

Few English county towns wear their history as visibly as Shrewsbury. The Shropshire capital sits within a near-complete loop of the River Severn, a geographical quirk that shaped its medieval street plan and left it with one of the most intact timber-framed townscapes in the country. Wander along Butcher Row or Fish Street and the jettied upper storeys of buildings dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries lean overhead, close enough that neighbours on opposite sides could almost shake hands across the lane.

The town's position on the Welsh Marches gave it strategic importance for centuries, and that layered past is legible at almost every turn. Shrewsbury Castle, remodelled by Thomas Telford in the late eighteenth century, overlooks the railway station. The red sandstone abbey founded by Roger de Montgomery in 1083 still holds services on the far side of the English Bridge. Charles Darwin was born here in 1809, and the town has quietly celebrated that connection ever since, with his statue seated outside the old school building on Castle Gates where he was once a pupil.
