Overview
Rome's catacombs are an underground network of ancient burial tunnels stretching for hundreds of kilometres beneath the city. The Catacombs of San Callisto are the largest and most visited, with 20 kilometres of tunnels, papal tombs and early Christian frescoes. San Sebastiano and Domitilla are smaller and less crowded. The Capuchin Crypt beneath Santa Maria della Concezione holds the bones of 3,700 Capuchin friars arranged in decorative patterns across six chapels. Most catacomb visits are guided only (no independent entry) and last 30 to 45 minutes underground. Combo tours pair two or three catacombs with transfers and a guide.
FAQ
Quick answers on booking, access and what to expect.
San Callisto is the most impressive for scale and history (papal tombs, 20km of tunnels). The Capuchin Crypt is the most visually striking. Domitilla is the quietest and best preserved. Combo tours let you compare two or three in a single morning.
Children over 6 are generally fine. The tunnels are narrow and dimly lit, which some younger children find unsettling. The Capuchin Crypt contains real human bones displayed openly, so use judgement. San Callisto is the most family-friendly of the main catacombs.
Yes. Most catacombs only allow entry with a guided tour, and group sizes are limited. Summer weekends sell out. The Capuchin Crypt accepts walk-ins but has a short queue.
