Reykjanesbær sits at the south-western tip of Iceland, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level and makes the ground beneath your feet a geological argument between two tectonic plates. The town itself grew up around Keflavík, which for decades served as a major NATO air base, and that history gives the place an unusual character among Icelandic settlements: part fishing community, part Cold War relic, part gateway to the rest of the country. Most international visitors pass through without stopping, arriving at Keflavík International Airport and heading straight for Reykjavík, roughly fifty kilometres to the north-east. The landscape here does not require embellishment; it is simply unlike most places on earth.
