Queens occupies the eastern edge of New York City, covering more ground than Manhattan and the Bronx combined, yet it rarely receives the same reflexive attention from first-time visitors. That imbalance is worth correcting. The borough sits across the East River from Midtown, connected by subway lines that run beneath Queensboro Bridge and through the tunnels of the N, W, 7, and E trains, and its sheer scale means that a single afternoon barely scratches the surface of what it contains.

The character of Queens is shaped above all by its demographic range. More languages are spoken here than in almost any comparable area on earth, a fact that is not merely statistical but physically present in the streetscape. Jackson Heights, in the north-west of the borough, moves from South Asian grocers and Colombian bakeries to Nepali restaurants within a few blocks. Flushing, further east along the 7 line, is home to one of the largest Chinese communities outside mainland China and a Koreatown that extends well beyond its nominal boundaries. These are not theme-park versions of cultural neighbourhoods; they are working, residential communities where the food, the signage, and the daily rhythm reflect populations that have been here for generations.
