Ha Long Bay needs little introduction, yet the city that serves as its gateway, Thành Phố Hạ Long, is often treated as a mere staging post rather than a destination in its own right. That is a misjudgement. Quảng Ninh province's capital sits along the northern coast of Vietnam, facing one of the most extraordinary seascapes on earth, where roughly 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rise from the Gulf of Tonkin in formations that have been accumulating for around 500 million years. The city itself is a working port town that has grown considerably since the coal and tourism industries expanded through the late twentieth century. Bãi Cháy, the western district, is where most visitors orient themselves, with its waterfront promenade, ferry terminals, and the concentration of hotels that face the bay. Hòn Gai, the older eastern district across the harbour, has a more local character, with a covered market and residential streets that see far fewer foreign visitors. The two were formally merged into a single city in 1994, and the bridge connecting them has made movement between the two straightforward, though the districts retain distinct atmospheres.
