Santorini is the largest island of a small archipelago formed by one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in recorded prehistory, an event that reshaped the Aegean around 1600 BCE and may have contributed to the decline of the Minoan civilisation on Crete. The caldera that remains is not merely a scenic backdrop but an active geological system, and the dark volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni sit at its centre, still venting sulphurous gases and warming the surrounding sea at certain points along the shoreline.
