The caldera that remains is not merely a scenic backdrop but an active geological system, and the dark volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni sit at its centre, still venting sulphurous gases and warming the surrounding sea at certain points along the shoreline. That geological drama is the single thread running through almost everything the island offers, from its unusual black and red beaches to the mineral-rich hot springs that draw swimmers out from tour boats anchored in the caldera.
