Jouw gids voor Ratchaburi
An hour west of Bangkok by road, Ratchaburi province sits where the central plains begin to fold into the limestone hills that mark the border with Myanmar. The provincial capital shares its name with the region and has been a significant settlement since at least the Dvaravati period, when Mon-speaking kingdoms shaped much of mainland Southeast Asia. That long continuity is visible in the city's temples, its riverside character along the Mae Klong River, and in the distinctive dragon-jar pottery that Ratchaburi has produced for centuries, the large ceramic vessels fired in local kilns and exported across the region.
Most visitors who come this way are drawn not to the capital itself but to Damnoen Saduak, the canal district roughly thirty kilometres south whose floating market became one of Thailand's most photographed scenes. The market operates on a network of narrow khlong, where vendors in wide-brimmed hats sell tropical fruit, pad thai, and fresh coconut from wooden boats. The scene is genuinely old in its logic, even if tourism has shaped its present form: canal trade was the economic backbone of this lowland region long before roads arrived, and the waterways remain navigable and in daily use. A guided tour from Bangkok that includes a paddle boat ride through the smaller canals gives a more immediate sense of the water-level world than the main market thoroughfare alone.
