Belasco Theatre: Broadway's Most Haunted Stage

The Belasco Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 111 W 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,016 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1907.

History of Belasco Theatre

The Belasco Theatre opened on October 16, 1907, as the Stuyvesant Theatre, designed by George Keister for the legendary producer-director David Belasco. Belasco renamed the theater after himself in 1910, and his spirit is said to haunt the building to this day, with reported sightings of a figure in clerical garb appearing in an empty box on opening nights.

The theater is one of the most architecturally distinctive houses on Broadway. Its interior features Tiffany stained glass, murals by Everett Shinn, and rich wood paneling throughout. Belasco himself maintained a 10-room duplex penthouse apartment above the theater, complete with a private elevator, where he lived and worked for decades.

Historic productions at the Belasco include Awake and Sing! and Waiting for Lefty (both 1935, landmark Group Theatre productions), Oh. Calcutta! (1971), and The Rocky Horror Show (1975). More recently, the theater hosted the Tony-winning Network starring Bryan Cranston (2018) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Appropriate.
